i just shared your story with one of my favorite former students. he lives in the san francisco area. he's a brilliant young man and great writer...his response "Ah, this is lovely." i agree with him.
Oh, thank you, Nancy. That's really kind of you. The name "Palo Alto" will probably resonate differently for him given that he's a Bay Area person, though I think of the Palo Alto here as figurative.
Also, thanks for the RT on Twitter!
The place names mean little to me Paul but the music of your writing sings.
It's gems like this that I occasionally fall upon in the blogosphere that make it all worthwhile. Beyond the general camaraderie, it's a joy to read such wonderful writing.
Thank you for pointing to music, Elisabeth. Hope you had a lovely day.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the heads-up on Genine's book! I hadn't known she published it.
Warmly,
Allegra (from P-town 2003)
Also, can I pub a link to your blog from my blog? http://blog.masslive.com/valleypoetry/index.html
Hi Allegra, It's good to hear from you. I think Genine just got her first copies the other day, so it's on the VERGE of being out if it's not exactly out. Yes to posting the link--thank you. Looking forward to checking out your blog. Happy New Year!
wow.
Thank you, Laura!
An oddly wonderful piece: displacement as a centering force, finding in losing. Great work, Paul
Thank you, Bill! That's beautifully said: more than I could see myself. I hope you've been well.
Paul, loved this piece, radiant with your voice and dense with mystery. Went happily from one post to another on your blog, and am enchanted by the photos. Will visit often.

Dear Gail, It's wonderful to see your name and hear your voice here. Thanks very much for the kind comment. Happy New Year to you and Porter. (Maybe I'll see you at AWP in Denver--you're still in Colorado, right?)
loved the story, Paul, ... it brought to mind your blog posts of the time you and Mark were in Palo Alto a while back. Agree with Bill, the sense of displacement is the through-line of the piece. Quite wonderful and so beautifully written.
Hi Lakin, Thanks for that. You're right: It does want to be a figurative retelling of our time in Palo Alto, though none of that was deliberate. Did I ever write about that run when I lost my way? I must have, but the thought of searching for that blog post makes me queasy. It occurs to me--it was just about a year ago, exactly!
I hope your writing has been going well. I'm wondering if you felt the earthquake as far down as your way. Hope all is well.
