Yes, I enjoyed myself at the reading last night. I'm off to give at craft talk in Akron in a few hours.
Thanks for the Sun Kil Moon suggestion--his version of Ohio is far sweeter and more nuanced than the Ohio in, say, the Modest Mouse song. Or Neil Young's, obviously. I had a hard time thinking of songs that weren't completely desolate. Does Ohio have its Springsteen? Am I overlooking somebody?
I wish my camera would send back an image with more polarity (as in dark and light.) It's pretty bleak out there today. But yesterday Lake Erie looked greenish, almost Caribbean in the sun.
Get yourself to Chagrin Falls, not far from Cleveland if you can...it's a low budget New Hope, but the Falls are pretty impressive and how can you miss visiting a place with a name like that? My daughter, Ellen tried hard to get to your reading last night, but got caught up in work and school, she's in West Cleveland. Also the newly renovated Cleveland Museum of Art is really nice and is near the Case Western Reserve campus, a sort of faux Paris on the Lake.
The Two Guys piece is pretty kick-ass. I love the way you get nostalgia to take a back seat to present and yet still honor that which is lost and gained.
Yep, that's about what it looks like: nothing wrong with your camera.
I grew up in the countryside east of Cleveland. As a kid I always had a deeply romantic notion of rainforests, ironically it never occurred to me that North-eastern Ohio really should be classified as a rainforest, it rains so much there.
I don't think Cleveland has ever done better than The Pretenders. "Back on the Chain Gang" always makes me think of it fondly.
I think the best thing about Cleveland, culturally, is its fantastic world-class orchestra, which plays at the beautiful Severance Hall, right by the Art Museum, which I agree with Bill is pretty great.
