Greenness

We were doing errands late yesterday afternoon when we came upon an organic garden, hidden behind a shopping center off Middlefield Road. It seemed to be a vestige of an earlier, sweeter Palo Alto--pre-internet, pre-three million dollar price tag for modest three-bedroom house—and all at once it made sense that the Grateful Dead had once spent time here. The vegetables made us very happy, especially the yellow-green cauliflower gleaming inside its blue collar.

Yes, those vestiges are still around, and disappearing. At the same time, I am reminded that the hippie/counterculture spirit is still alive and well in Northern California, and perhaps now even more sustainable. I am thinking of the community/urban garden movement that has gained momentum, as well as the whole Burning Man phenomenon (although that has already passed into the phase where people are angry that it has become so "mainstream" and commercialized).
