Mark is in London; my brother, Michael, who'd planned to visit today, canceled his trip; and it's raining, raining outside. I've been reading fellowship applications since three. My eyes hurt. I'm taking a break, entertaining myself with a question: what band would Herman Melville have listened to if he were young-ish today? This is what I've come up with, the San Francisco-based band Xiu Xiu (pronounced Shu Shu). See what you think.

I love that photo, it's London-esque
Who knew, Melville would have been so hip, so, Xiu Xiu.
I stuck my arm out the living room window during the downpour. I'm not sure the cellphone got the downpour, but you're right: it sure looks like London.
Melville will always be extremely hip! (I'm a little obsessed with Xiu Xiu's videos right now--there's a ton of them up on youtube.)
I love the naked free for all of the Sigur Ros video you posted, all the youthful free spirited frolic that we cover up. It reminded me of the River Dogs documentary from long ago.
Where would Broken Social Scene & Apostle of Hussle figure in, who would listen to them? Or are they yesterday's news?
Hi Lu, I was actually thinking of Broken Social Scene when I first heard Fabulous Muscles. I suppose BSS is better known. As far as yesterday's news, I'm sure there are some who would say that Xiu Xiu's yesterday's news. I hope all these bands stay around for a long time--that's the hard part.
Maybe yesterday's news is ok, at least if we want to be Zen present.
But what we want is for them to keep solvent and together so they can keep making the music that we like getting lost in-- some borrowed revelry for a spell.
That indeed is the hard part- so little solvency for musicians and writers.
No one said it better. I agree with every word.
